Our K2 Joomla Templates (updated)

page.title

Last week I posted how and where to check out which of our Joomla templates are compatible with Joomla 1.7 and today I thought I would point out that I have added a page where you can see which of our joomla templates are compatible with K2.

We have been diligently supporting K2 in our template releases since January 2009 and while the original claims were that K2 was Joomla 1.6 for Joomla 1.5, we think it's actually quite a lot more.

Why do you need K2 if Joomla 1.6 / Joomla 1.7 is here?

While Joomla 1.6 / Joomla 1.7 brought us acl, nested categories and other improvements, K2 offers (in my opinion) some key features in addition to these that are necessary for an all in one blogging / magazine publishing package.

Features like integrated author profile, latest comments modules, social links, image and video galleries are crucial for running and maintaining a blog. Certainly you can add some of these extra features to your Joomla site via other 3rd party offerings however K2 does this in a single package and within a single admin interface.

If you have done any work at all with Joomla, you will know that there isn't just one single solution to a problem. In fact with the flexibility of the Joomla platform and the proliferation of Joomla extensions you can often find three, four or more solutions to any problem.

So with that in mind I realise that choosing to go with a CCK like K2 or sticking with the core Joomla package is a personal choice and really depends on client needs, as well as your own while developing the site for your client. I have heard that some clients aren't quite technically up to using k2 or at least some find the learning curve is a little too steep.

Joomla users are spolied for choice ...

We use K2 on the blog here and feel like it does a good job of organising and publishing content, although there have been some semi-recent additions to Joomla blogging options such as Easy Blog and of course Zoo which look like good options as well. I think in the end it comes down to how you like to work and how much time you have invested in learning one particular tool.

So how and what do you choose?

Im interested in finding out when it comes to choosing a cck or going with the Joomla core - how do you make that decision?

Do you choose a different option depending on your client needs or the context?

What is your favourite cck for Joomla?

That link again ...

For a full run down on which of our Joomla templates have k2 specific template overrides checkout the K2 Joomla Template page.

K2 for Joomla 1.7

Also ... I have it on good authority that we should see a Joomla 1.7 version of K2 this month sometime. So keep your eyes peeled on twitter, the k2 site or even at the Joomlaworks home base for more updates.
